The fortress of Santa Maria, built at the top of the Hill of the Boboli Gardens, took the name Fort Belvedere because of the view that it enjoys from its terraces. The fortress, built by Ferdinando I de ` Medici, was designed by Bernardo Buontalenti started work in 1590 and 1591 in them. The strategic location of the Fort, connected through Boboli Gardens with the Medici residence of palazzo Pitti, to protect the city from external attacks and could simultaneously be the refuge of doctors in case of an internal revolt. The fortress, inserted by Buontalenti in pre-existing walls, has a complex layout with bastions and fronts a pincer and sits on two levels to adapt to the conformation of the land. On top stands the building, already present in the plant in Florence designed by Bonsignori in 1584. Under the stylish building is the underground, protected from ingenious traps, built by Buontalenti to welcome the treasure of doctors. Until 1859 the Fort Belvedere was used as a military uses; later, to make publicly available defensive structure, were carried out numerous restoration that liberated the building from the XIX century and restored the superstructures ramparts and earthworks
